I was given this book way back in December as birthday gift as it was one of my friends' favourite book series. It took me so much longer than usual to finish this book because I found it really difficult to get into the flow of the novel. The writing wasn't bad, but it did leave something to be desired. The real problem with Vampire Academy is the characters. I found the main, character, Rose, completely un-relatable and her friendship with Lissa just didn't seem real. The initial plot also didn't excite me, maybe because the only thing that was really happening was seemingly random outbursts of sassiness from Rose. As a whole, I only truly liked two characters in the book; Dimitri and Christian.
Although there is a presence of romance in the novel, it isn't the dominating theme of the book which is a refreshing take on vampire novels. I was getting a little bored of the instant attraction that vampires miraculously experience whenever they meet anyone with a strange name. There are a few little bits of humour, usually in the form of snarky comments from Rose that broke up the seriousness of each situation that she found herself in.
Despite my initial reluctance to read this novel, I actually found myself enjoying the final few chapters. I understand that the climax of a book is at the end of a book, leaving enough time for a resolution, but I expect there to be something captivating before this to keep a reader interested. Unfortunately, the pace didn't really set in until three-quarters of the way through but when it kicked in, boy did it kick in. Those last few chapters were absolutely brilliant.
Thanks to this last few chapters, I'm planning on giving the next book in the series a go because I'm hoping the quality of the final chapters will pass on to the sequel. I think I would recommend Vampire Academy to any avid reader, although they will most likely have already read it, and also to fans of young adult fictions.
