Like pretty much everyone, I loved The Fault In Our Stars. I mean, what's not to love?Because of TFIOS, I had very high expectations for Looking For Alaska.
The use of the "... days before" structure throughout the novel made it clear that there was a build up to a immensely important, perhaps life changing, event for Miles. I assumed this would be the death of a major character simply because it's John Green, and he likes to kill people off. The countdown of days seemed to make me more eager to continue reading as it made it clear that I was nearing the event that I needed to read.
When it actually came down to, the event that the whole book had been working towards wasn't all that great. Yes, it was sad, but it was nothing compared to TFIOS. There was no gut wrenching, tear jerking event to bring the whole novel to a head which really disappointed me. I was expecting so much more from this book!
Despite my initial disappointment, I realise that this is actually a well written, good book. It will never live up to the expectations of The Fault In Our Stars, but it definitely shouldn't be overlooked.
