I read the first book in this series, Throne of Glass, sometime last year and I loved it. I pre-ordered this one and was so happy when it finally arrived, but after three failed attempts at getting beyond the first few chapters, I was beginning to get annoyed at the book. The main reason for the was the opening chapter, and the fact that Celaena - the best assassin in the land - left wet footprints behind her when she was on an assignment. Wet footprints are noticed and this seems pretty obvious to me. A friend from college insisted that it got so much better though, so I forced my way through the first quarter of the book and I'm glad to say, it got amazing.
In general, Maas has a very pretty style of writing. It is very easy to read without being overly simple and boring. Her characters are written well, as are the relationships between them. Despite some little flaws, like the one I mentioned, it a fairly well written book.
At times, the character of Celaena can be a little bit unrelatable but I think that is due to her nature as an assassin. Her interactions with Choal are simply beautiful, even when they argue, and I just wish they could have had more time together because they are just perfect. In my opinion, Choal is one of the best characters, and he is very interesting although I cannot understand why he doesn't just sit Celaena down and make her listen to his side of the story. The ending of the book, however, proves to me his devotion to her. I absolutely have to find out what happens next with them, although I've been sort of spoiled for some events in Heir of Fire.
I can't wait to begin Heir of Fire, but I have a lot of other books on my TBR list before I get to it.
